As a strong oxidizing agent, chlorine dioxide also has many functions such as algae removal, sludge, anti-corrosion, anti-mold, freshness, deodorization, chlorination and bleaching, and is very widely used. At the same time, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an important oxide of chlorine, which is flammable and explosive due to its unstable properties.
1. Properties of chlorine dioxide
Chlorine dioxide is a yellow-green to orange-yellow gas with a molecular weight of 67.45 and a stimulant gas similar to chlorine, with a boiling point of 11°C and a melting point of -59°C at 760mmHg, with a specific gravity of 3.09g/L. It is explosive when the volume concentration in air exceeds 10%, but it is very safe in aqueous solution. Chlorine dioxide is 5 times more soluble in water than chlorine, and dissolves into a yellow solution in water.
As a strong oxidizing agent, chlorine dioxide can effectively destroy trace organic pollutants in water. ClO2 has been used in drinking water treatment for over 50 years in the United States because it is highly efficient, safe, and non-toxic. It is the only highly effective disinfection and sterilizer among internationally recognized chlorine-containing disinfectants.
2. Application scope of chlorine oxide:
(1) Disinfection of life, drinking and tap water in various occasions; sterilization and disinfection of sanitation facilities;
(2) Final sterilization and disinfection of equipment, pipelines and containers in food, beverage factories and fermentation industries;
(3) Sterilization and disinfection of hospital sewage, disinfection of medical, sanitary and clinical instruments;
(4) Sterilization and disinfection of swimming pool circulating water and bath water; algae removal and sterilization treatment of industrial circulating cooling water;
(5) Disinfection of fish and shrimp processing processes, animal and livestock breeding premises and drinking water, and disinfection of silkworm cocoon breeding equipment;
(6) Sterilization and deodorization in reclaimed water reuse; bleaching agent in papermaking, printing and dyeing industry.
3. Harm to the human body and its dangerous characteristics
It is obviously irritating and corrosive in the gaseous or highly concentrated liquid state, which can lead to a series of symptoms of the inhalatory system, and in severe cases, pulmonary edema and respiratory failure. However, it is used for water disinfection because it dissolves in water, undergoes chemical changes and is harmless to humans at low concentrations.
The concentrated vapor of chlorine dioxide explodes when the atmospheric pressure exceeds 41Kpa, that is, it explodes at 40Kpa. When the concentration of chlorine dioxide in solution is higher than 10% (Wt/V) or in air is greater than 10% (V/V), low-level explosions are prone to occur, and in the presence of organic vapors, such explosions may become intense. All attempts to compress or store chlorine dioxide, either alone or in combination with other gases, have been commercially unsuccessful. Because of its explosion hazard, chlorine dioxide must be manufactured at the site of use.
